Working on Purpose

God gave us the concept of work back in the Garden of Eden and He cares about your work as much today as he did back then. But challenging and disruptive work issues could distract us from our walk with God leaving us frustrated and wondering if what we do even matters or if the life we are living is in God's will.

Is it wrong to want to be promoted? What's the point of continuous improvement? Is it gossip to confide in a co-worker? Am I sacrificing my health or my family for my job? Will I ever make the boss happy?

We have so many questions about work and reasons why we need to work, but God wants us to discover its purpose. Based on the five biblical purposes model, let's look at what God has in mind for our work in the word SERVE:

Work vs Serve

Stewardship (worship) Be a responsible trustee 1 Peter 4:10 (AMP)
Education (discipleship) Be a lifelong learner Timothy 3:2 (NCV)

Relationships (fellowship) Be an encourager 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV)

Values (ministry) Be a person of integrity Proverbs 10:9 (NIV)

Excellence (evangelism) Be a role model 2 Peter 1:5 - 8 (NASB)

About

Workplace Small Groups

Develop Deeper Relationships

Nobody understands what life is like where you work better than a co-worker. A workplace small group can be a wonderful opportunity to develop deeper and more meaningful relationships with your co-workers and to see God at work with you in your job and in the lives of those in your group. It’s as simple as connecting with two or more of your co-workers over lunch each week.

Co-workers who come together to grow to be more like Christ at work find they have an increase in peace, joy and patience at work and a greater understanding of God’s purpose for their job.

Legal Rights

As faith is intersecting work on a more regular basis, employers, employees and individuals are trying to understand how this applies to their place of work, their life and their work life.

For employers and employees, the legal web of religion in the workplace can be confusing, intimidating or empowering depending upon your point of view and knowledge of the subject matter.

Most people refrain from any overt religious expression because they don't know that both the employer and the employee have religious protection and rights under the law. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

Since the 1980's, spirituality has begun to move into the workplace as people seek to integrate their faith and work to fulfill a desire to live an integrated holistic life. Dozens of companies from Coca Cola to Microsoft are becoming “faith friendly” allowing groups to meet for Bible study or to discuss ethics from a religious perspective. As employers and employees understand how to balance the personal needs of the employees with the needs of the employer, they will find that it is good for everyone.

The Legal 10 Commandments are a practical application of the law at work in a Christ-like manner. The Legal Q&A is a video library that will address the most commonly asked questions about living out one's faith at work.

Saddleback Church is not dispensing nor endorsing legal advice and is not responsible for how this material is used. These resources are here to help you understand how faith and work mix from a legal perspective and what is permissible as you live out your faith at work.
