13 Ministry Updates
11/19/2016 .As part of our Daring Faith campaign, we want to train 25% of our members to be global leaders in the church and ministry, in business and the community, and in the arts and media. This past month, our church family committed to meeting this goal by participating in new training programs hosted by some of our key ministries.
Check out some of the exciting ways our members are getting equipped to impact the world!
ACCELERATE: THE PD SMALL GROUPS WORKSHOP
To train membership teams at our international campuses, leaders recently attended Accelerate, our Purpose Driven small groups workshop. On November 12, our Hong Kong campus trained 49 people on the strategic planning process for hosts and CLASS leaders. Meanwhile, Saddleback Manila had 60 attendees for their own Accelerate event, and Berlin hosted 75 participants by offering training to four neighboring churches.
SMALL GROUP LEADERSHIP: TRAINING 1
On November 15 and 16 at our Lake Forest campus, 34 people attended and completed the Small Group Leadership Training 1 course, which covered the material over two weeks.
WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP TRAINING
On November 11 at our Lake Forest campus, 70 volunteer table leaders were trained during our Women’s Leadership Training. Covering the topic of Temptation of Leadership, the powerful event was centered around the Mark 12:30 and importance of loving the Lord with our minds.
SINGLES LEADERSHIP TEAM NIGHT
On November 4, a committed group of 24 volunteers were trained at the Saddleback Singles Leadership Team Night. The purpose was to encourage, equip, empower, enable, and energize our leaders to facilitate our global mission.
SALT: GIANT KILLER AWARDS
Held on the second Sunday of every month, SALT (Saddleback Advanced Leadership Training) encourages, equips, and inspires our members to be a more effective leaders. At every SALT gathering, Pastor Rick’s leadership training helps build leadership skills, and features updates and stories from regional and international campuses. It is also a time of commissioning the new CLASS 301 graduates, and recognizing the Giant Killers for the month.
At our most recent SALT gathering, we recognized 147 Giant Killers from all our campuses, 192 graduates from our Lake Forest CLASS 301, and 451 graduates trained in CLASS 301 from our regional campuses.
PRODUCTION TEAM TRAINING
On November 15 at our Anaheim campus, 60 people attend the Saddleback Production Training Night. The evening was a chance to enhance skills in the areas of audio console training, Christmas lighting and set design, service production and planning, video Grass Valley T2 training, and Pro Presenter training. Also during the training, Greg Baker shared a brief devotional to encourage and support one another.
According to Central Production Director, Daniel Scotti, the night was all about having conversations and building relationships in the areas of production. “We connected with other campuses and fellow team members on ideas and resources. Teams shared about what’s going really well, and areas where they would like to learn how to better support what they do.”

On behalf of our Global Broadcast Team, training is available each month for our 120 volunteers who assist in camera operators, graphics operators, and video engineering. Without any prior experience, they can be trained by the Global Broadcast Team from the ground up.
JUNIOR HIGH MINISTRY LEADER TRAINING
On November 17, our JHM Leader Training—for weekend and Life Group Leaders—brought in 71people. The evening event covered junior high development, encouraging and equipping for life challenges, and pastoral care. Other topics of discussion were how to address anxiety, depression, and family conflict, and how to respond and encourage students during trying times.
SADDLEBACK KIDS COACH MEETING
Once a quarter, key leaders from Saddleback Kids gather together for our coach meetings. Our most recent event involved 50 Lake Forest coaches for hands-on training.
At Saddleback, a SK coach carries a significant load of responsibility for his/her respective age group and area of ministry. In addition to handling administrative duties, the coach also provides pastoral care and encouragement to the area leaders.
Quarterly coach meetings are an opportunity to build and enrich this team of core leaders, and provide practical training in such areas as emergency procedures, leadership development, seasonal encouragement, and corporate prayer for the ministry and for one other. The next Lake Forest Christmas Coach Meeting is scheduled for December 1 at 6:30 PM in the Edge.
WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY
Last month, Pastor Rick and Kay Warren hosted a free online webcast for World Mental Health Day. It was designed to encourage individuals living with mental illness, educate and support their families, and equip church leaders for compassionate and effective mental health ministry. This online broadcast featured messages from the second historic Gathering on Mental Health and the Church. Topics included removing stigma, suicide-risk reduction, support groups, crisis management, and holistic care.
To coincide with this event, 36 volunteers were trained on basic help skills, crisis intervention, and how to provide referrals. This online event was staffed by volunteers in MO1 who answered prayer line calls and responded to emails requesting help from viewers of the program.
INTERNATIONAL SURVIVORS SUICIDE LOSS DAY
On November 19, Saddleback and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) partnered together to host an event on International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Kay Warren and AFSP representatives presented during the event, and featured a screening of Life Journey’s: Reclaiming Life After a Loss.
Held from 9:00 AM—12:30 PM at Lake Forest’s Refinery, the event drew 20 volunteers who were trained on facilitating support groups for people who have a lost a loved one due to suicide.
DANIEL PLAN LEADERSHIP TRAINING
From September 15– November 3, over 120 participants took part in the 8-week on-campus training. The purpose was to provide Daniel Plan members an opportunity to step into roles of leadership in areas such as: Group Host, Sports & Fitness Daniel Plan Mentor, PEACE Center Leader, Central Support Team, Weekend Relations Team and more. Attendees were equipped to become leaders and trainers in their fields of interest within Daniel Plan.
The training included an optional Saturday morning tour with the Daniel Plan nutritionist who guided members through grocery stores on the best products to buy for a healthy lifestyle.
KSG LEADER TRAINING
Twice a year, our Kids Small Group Leaders participate in training where they are equipped and encouraged to disciple children toward spiritual maturity. The training focuses on practical skills, leadership objectives, and building community among leaders. At our August training, 265 KSG volunteer leaders were trained, and a new group is already registering for the second training taking place December 13 and 14 at Lake Forest’s The Edge.
The upcoming training will focus on Psalms 78:72, “He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands.” This Scripture will set the stage for leaders to prepare their our own hearts for work in ministry by taking steps of maturity in faith. They will also discuss leading with skillful hearts and hands by leaning on coaches to counsel leaders in challenges they face in their groups.
