Reaching the Community
06/24/2017 .Saddleback Church is always looking for new ways to reach the community, fill God’ house, and meet people where they are, even if that means hosting sports events to invite them into our church family.
This month our Outreach Team launched Saddleback’s new indoor soccer league, Papi Fútbol Club. The pilot program kicked off June 17 with a trial game hosted at The Refinery.
Held every other Sunday from 3:00–6:00 PM, the indoor soccer games take place on The Refinery basketball court, and are fashioned after the popular club sport throughout Central and South America. The game is played with two teams of five, including a designated goalkeeper on each team.
Unlimited substitutions are permitted, which means everyone gets a chance to play. Each week, new teams will be formed and all skill levels are welcome. Drop-in coed matches are open to anyone over 12 years of age, with dedicated games for families with teens.
The brainchild of Community Outreach Coordinator, Walmer Landaverde, the idea came about to help grow the church in a unique way. As he explains, “The ultimate goal is to create a fun, noncompetitive environment where people can let down their guard, build friendships, and connect with others while playing the best sport on the planet!”
Setting the tone will be lively music and energetic referees creating a game style similar to the Harlem Globetrotters, combining athleticism, interaction, and comedy.
Falling under The Daniel Plan ministry, the soccer games are also a great way to exercise and stay fit without hitting the gym. Catering to both Saddleback members and the un-churched, the outreach targets a wide variety of players who can build relationships in a safe environment.
The first official game is scheduled to take place on July 2nd. In the meantime, the Community Outreach Team is busy recruiting referees and team captains. Those interested in playing can simply drop-in or sign up to participate at saddleback.com/papifutbol. Questions can be sent to Walmer Landaverde at WalmerL@saddleback.com. No registration or fees are required. Bring your friends, neighbors, and family!
“We're very intentional about building community,” says Walmer. “We’re hoping this will encourage members to bring new people to church, especially youth from the area.”
