Welcome to our new series called Step by Step. We have looked through the Bible and studied the stories and things God has said and done and have come to this incredible conclusion that God wants to have a relationship with us! He wants to be near to us and for us to be near to Him. He also knows that left on our own the decisions we make and things we do can cause a lot of hurt but when we choose to follow Him and live life the we He intended us to live that we will begin to live an incredible life we never knew we could experience. Times may be tough and we may not always get it right but we take life one step at a time closer to God and step by step we come closer to a life better than we could've dreamed of.

Join us for this incredible series of how we can grow closer to God and walk Step by Step with Him. Also, come with questions that we can discuss how to grow closer to Him and know what He is up to in our lives.

This spring we launched the Saddleback food pantry, and it has already helped thousands of people in our community. But we can't continue to do it without your help! If you're interested in donating, please pick up a shopping bag and a list of needed items after the service, and you can drop the items off in the blue barrels on any weekend.

If you're interested in donating, here's what we're looking for:

Happy... Week 2

In Matthew 5:4, Jesus makes this statement, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." I have always wondered about this verse because I think what it is telling me is that those who cry out to God are happy. Of course that is only my initial thoughts because the more I think about it, the more it makes sense and I totally agree with the statement.

It reminds me of a passage in Mark 10, when a blind man receives his sight...

Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

⁴⁶Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the Son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging. ⁴⁷When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

⁴⁸Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

⁴⁹Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you." ⁵⁰Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

⁵¹"What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him.
The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see."

⁵²"Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

In this story, there is a crowd of people following Jesus. I am assuming these people are like me and everyone else I've ever met in my life and that they have some serious issues in their life that they can't handle. I have to believe there are people in that crowd that are in the middle of a conflict with someone over something. There has to be someone in that crowd that has relationship issues with a parent. Depression isn't a new problem either and someone has to be dealing with that. Pretty much, I believe the people in that crowd are just as screwed up as me and everyone else I know.

The funny thing is, according to the story only one person was crying out to Jesus that day. I didn't hear anything about anyone crying out to Jesus because of personal sin in their life or problems. Jesus was the only person who could heal Bartimaeus and he knew that. The blind man cried out to Jesus and Jesus did something about it that was amazing. Jesus heard the man's cry and answered him. It was amazing! The only thing I want to know is why no one else was crying out to Jesus that day?

We have problems in our lives that we have tried to deal with on our own and can't seem to do anything about it. We know we have problems that we can't seem to fix on our own. When are we gonna learn that we can cry out to Jesus and that He cares and will hear us? When are we gonna learn that we can cry out to Him not only when a family member dies or parents divorce but when we are struggling with lust or some other issue in our life?

The awesome thing is that Jesus hears us when we cry out to Him and is everything we ever needed. He cares enough about us to give us what we need even if it isn't what we want or are expecting. He cares enough to love us no matter what and to work in our lives to make us into the people He wants us to be. We should all ask ourselves, "What should I be crying out to God for?" and "What is God trying to say to me?"

Jesus Teaches the People

¹ When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a hill and sat down. His followers came to him, ² and he began to teach them, saying:
    ³ "They are blessed who realize their spiritual poverty,
       for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
    ⁴ They are blessed who grieve,
       for God will comfort them.
    ⁵ They are blessed who are humble,
       for the whole earth will be theirs.
    ⁶ They are blessed who hunger and thirst after justice,
       for they will be satisfied.
    ⁷ They are blessed who show mercy to others,
       for God will show mercy to them.
    ⁸ They are blessed whose thoughts are pure,
       for they will see God.
    ⁹ They are blessed who work for peace,
       for they will be called God's children.
    ¹⁰ They are blessed who are persecuted for doing good,
       for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

¹¹ "People will insult you and hurt you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things about you because you follow me. But when they do, you will be blessed. ¹² Rejoice and be glad, because you have a great reward waiting for you in heaven. People did the same evil things to the prophets who lived before you.

In Matthew 5, Jesus gives a famous sermon on being happy. It is an incredible sermon and we are spending the next number of weeks talking about Jesus statements and how to be "happy". First glance at these verses you may wonder how someone could be happy when they grieve, or when they realize they are spiritually poor and can't do life on their own without God. But, maybe Jesus is right? I know many of us want to be happy and find true satisfaction in life and we keep on finding ourselves disappointed because we aren't in control and can be happy all the time on our own. We need help... we need Jesus.

In verse 3, Jesus says those who realize they have spiritual needs are happy. We all know our track record has been pretty bad. We seem to always find a way to screw things up for ourselves and others. Even the best of us have moments where we are selfish and ignore what is right. But Jesus is saying those who realize they don't have everything together and realize they need God are happy. Jesus is standing on earth telling this sermon because He knows He has come to restore man's relationship with God. He knows that we need Him and what He wants to do in our lives to help us live lives we couldn't live on our own.

Let's be happy because of who God is and what He has done to help us and give us lives that are full of life and adventure.

Music & Lyrics... With Everything

For the Music & Lyrics series we started by talking about the hope we have in God. No matter what happens, whether it is pain or struggles, we have hope in God that this isn't the end. Some people may see death as the worst thing that could happen but because of the hope we have in Christ, death isn't the end. The following week we talked about the love of God. The things He has done throughout history to show His love for us and restore a relationship with us. Jesus was the ultimate display of the love God has for us and that He gave Himself for us and our sin. Oh, how He loves us!

This last week we wanted to build on how the relieving the hope we have in Christ is and how life changing the love He has for us is and say that the only proper response to who God is and what He has done is glory. No one has ever done what God has done for us and nothing else can compare to Him and His character. Those who glorify God best with their lives are those who are most satisfied by Him.
