    Relating to Difficult People

    Stacie Wood | November 6, 2022

We’ve all had difficult relationships at one point in our lives — some of us are dealing with them right now. What do we do when we’re faced with relational challenges? How does God want us to move forward? This week, Pastor Stacie Wood shows us three things we can do to navigate difficult relationships.

    Message Action Plan

Scriptures: Ephesians 5:1-2 (NIV); Ephesians 4:1-2 (NIV); Proverbs 15:1 (NIV)

    Key Points:

    Transformed people transform their relationships.

ACTION PLAN: Ephesians 5:1-2 tells us to be imitators of God. Ask yourself how well you are reflecting God, living a life of love in your relationships. If there's room for improvement, read Luke 5 and focus on how Jesus loved the people he was with. Ask him to transform you so you can transform your relationships.

    Purification is a process.

How To Relate to Difficult People:

    1. Don't take the bait.

ACTION PLAN: Think back to your last disagreement that ended poorly. Do you remember how it started? Consider how it would have turned out if you hadn't taken the bait but instead followed the wisdom of Proverbs 15:1. If you were responsible for the harsh words, ask for forgiveness both from the person you spoke to and from God. Ask God to help you pause next time.

    2. Stay at the table.
    3. Choose to love.

ACTION PLAN: We all have difficult people in our lives. Write down the name of a difficult person in each of the following areas: work, extended family, and elsewhere. For each person, plan to do a deliberate loving gesture towards them before Thanksgiving. Pray that they would experience God's love through your act of love.
